Good morning, neighbors! It's October and it's Friday. Two things I enjoy. I appreciate when local businesses/organizations provides some of their history. Yesterday, I stumbled onto the Genna's Lounge website — an establishment which has been a Madison-staple for 50 plus years now — and went down a research rabbit hole, though I really just needed to check its hours of operation. Back in the mid-1960s, Genna's was a hangout for the radical activists protesting against the Vietnam War. "While State Street often looked like a war zone, Genna's never suffered a broken window during the war at home," the site states. This reminded me of the documentary "The War at Home" (1979) which I watched while researching for a project. The film touches on a bit of everything from that era including the Sterling Hall bombing, the Dow Chemical Protests and Black student organizers standing against the war and the racist UW administration. It also includes extensive interviews with a young, always mustached Paul Soglin. Any student can watch the doc for free with their Kanopy subscription! Song of the Day: "Let's Get Out Of This Country" by Camera Obscura. First, today's weather: Very warm with periods of sun. High: 85 Low: 65. Here are the top stories in Madison today: Six people have died on East Washington Avenue since April. As part of Vision Zero, the city's plan to eliminate traffic deaths, the city has implemented measures such as reduced speed limits, improved crosswalk lighting and many more citations. While there is still a way to go, data has shown that drivers are slowing down. (Cap Times)"Everything COVID" is one of four new exhibits at the Overture Center in the Playhouse Gallery. With over 70 pieces, mostly from local artists, it serves as a "time capsule" and spotlights the pandemic's themes — such as social isolation. (Wisconsin State Journal) As someone who majored in tweeting a.k.a. journalism, I surely felt a lot of judgement from my STEM friends who loved to talk about the intensity of their courses and their planned out, stable career paths. The Badger Herald is taking a look at "Mickey Mouse Degrees" or majors that are often critiques for being useless and easy. This story takes a look at students majoring in fashion design — a major which involves long hours in the studio and conversations about the politics and economics of design. (Badger Herald)Speaking of local business websites, have you ever taken a look at thecrystalcornerbar.com? If you have, undoubtedly you are at least a bit curious why it has not been updated and fully embraces this early 2000s aesthetic. Read more about it.
