WESTPORT, CT — In light of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the seal on the town's police cars will be changed to pink for a month and many officers will be participating in the Pink Patch Project. In a news release, Police Lt. Dave Wolf said National Breast Cancer Awareness Month offers a chance to promote education and raise awareness about the importance of prevention and early detection of the disease. "As in years past," Wolf said in a news release, "the Westport Police Department is proud to stand with the courageous women and men who battled or are currently battling this disease." According to Police Chief Foti Koskinas, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a very important time for the police department, as most officers have watched a family member or friend battle this disease. "As I say every year," Koskinas said in a news release, "we can all make a difference in this fight. Ask someone you love to get a mammogram, and encourage your family, friends, community and local organizations to spread the word." To show their support and promote awareness education, the color of the town seal on the department's police car doors will be changed from black and gold to pink for the month of October. The seals were donated to the department by Fleet Auto Supply, Wolf said. Many officers will also be participating in the Pink Patch Project, a program that centers on vibrant pink versions of the public safety employees' uniform patch. "Officers will wear the pink patches on their regular duty uniforms for the entire month of October," Wolf said. "Westport officers are also authorized to wear a pink ribbon pin on their duty uniform to show their support for this cause." Additional information about breast cancer and breast cancer screenings, as well as a link for those wishing to donate to the cause, can be found on the American Cancer Society's website.
