The First International Peoples' Tribunal on Climate and Social Justice WHAT: The First International Peoples' Tribunal on Climate and Social Justice is an independent fact-finding investigation created by the Victims [hereinafter "Victims" or "Peoples"] of state actors, the City of Miami government [hereinafter "City"]. The goal of the Tribunal is to regain the authority of the Peoples when the States fail to protect the right of the Peoples. The City has failed to address impunities that are associated with ongoing human and environmental degradation. Included in peoples' constitutional rights to life, liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness is a stable climate system. The City's deliberate indifference to climate justice has placed the Victims under dangerous climatic conditions that create an unreasonable risk of harm. The Victims will present demonstrative, testimonial, and documentary evidence to establish, among other things, that the City has not responded reasonably to this urgent crisis. Instead, the City has acted to exacerbate the climate crisis. The Tribunal will be similar to courtroom proceedings. The primary difference between a Peoples' Tribunal and traditional courts is that the Peoples' Tribunal does not rely on state-based legal authority. Instead, the Tribunal acts independently of states, politics, and vested interests. While its findings do not have the compulsory binding force of state-based or federal courts, the legal standards against which the City is judged are those expressed in the United States Constitution and the Florida Constitution. Complaints heard by the Tribunal are submitted by the Victims or by groups or individuals representing them. The Tribunal will call together all parties concerned and offer the City the opportunity to respond to the allegations. Questions?
