NASSAU COUNTY, NY — In order to help veterans dealing with mental trauma, Nassau County is launching a new program to help veterans get in contact with licensed social workers specializing in helping them. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced that the county's Veteran Services Agency (VSA) will be hiring two licensed social workers that will be on-site in the agency's East Meadow office to offer assistance to veterans in need. "We have seen COVID have a real impact on the mental health of our residents across the board, and that includes our veterans," said Curran. "Our veterans face a tremendous amount of mental health problems and stressors." The social workers will be trained in veterans affairs and dealing with military distress, Curran said, so that Nassau's veterans can get the best care. The goal is to have the counselors available Monday through Saturday, to accommodate a variety of different schedules. Services will be free to all of Nassau's veterans. "We want to make sure our veterans have the complete care they need, and that includes behavioral and mental health services," said Curran. Information on scheduling appointments can be found by calling the VSA at 516-572-6565.
