Description
This program/activity will explore the Mexican tradition of honoring friends and family who have passed away. Dia de los Muertos (in English, “Day of the Dead”) is a celebration to honor the lives and the memories of our loved ones who have passed away. While the holiday is celebrated throughout Latin America, presenter Adriana Santos will talk specifically about the blend of indigenous and Spanish Catholic traditions of Mexico. Some major themes she will discuss include: Dia de los Muertos is a celebration of life. It is not something to be afraid of! How can we look at the traditions of Dia de los Muertos to cope with and honor the loss of our loved ones? Dia de los Muertos is a much different holiday than Halloween, and understanding these differences is important in developing a cultural understanding Altars are a central component of Dia de los Muertos celebrations. What do families put on an altar? How can we create a personalized space to honor our loved ones? The program will be followed by a Marigolds & Papel Picado Interactive Workshop. Papel picado is used in many ways, like place mats, flags, and banners. Guests will learn how to create paper marigolds and papel picado that they can bring home with them. Guests are encouraged to bring photographs of their loved for temporary display on a community-built altar (you will be able to take you photographs home with you after the program.) We welcome you to explore our community’s stories and share you own. This program is free and open to the public. NCHGS works to share the stories of Northampton County’s past to encourage personal reflection, community dialogue, and an understanding of history’s impact on our lives. We use the important lessons from our history to offer the community dynamic tours, family programs for diverse populations, thought-provoking exhibitions, and special events. We provide student and adult research opportunities at the Jane S. Moyer Library and the NCHGS Archives. We preserve the Bachmann Publick House, the Mixsell Illick House, and the Jacob Nicholas House. We care for the Kressler Memorial Garden and an outstanding museum collection at the Sigal Museum. We also publish books and newsletters, offer curriculum-based educational tours to students, and custom group tours and talks. Join us to make history come to life!
