DENVER, CO — Reid Alexander was not only given the gift of love on his wedding day – his husband, Rafael Dìaz, gave him the gift of life a few months later as well. That's how a GoFundMe campaign describes the story of Alexander and Dìaz, who are recovering in an Indiana hospital after Dìaz donated his kidney to Alexander last month. When he was 17, Alexander was diagnosed with Alport Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that destroys the kidneys, a GoFundMe spokesperson said. While waiting for a new kidney, he moved from his home state of Indiana to Denver, where he met Dìaz. The two married, then underwent the transplant surgery in August after receiving more than $12,000 via the GoFundMe campaign. Alexander and Dìaz have been recovering at the Indiana University Methodist Hospital since the surgery, which they described as "very successful" in the GoFundMe campaign. Since both men had to take at least three months' leave from their jobs and will be remaining in Indiana for the foreseeable future, they are still raising money via GoFundMe. "There is still no clear sign of when we be returning back home to Colorado," Reid said. "We are still waiting to get care established back home in Denver, that is our biggest task. We are so grateful for this opportunity to share life and would not change a thing." Donate here. GoFundMe is a Patch partner.
