Police Charge Fleeing Suspect After Officer Shot Him: Officials

TEMPLE HILLS, MD — Police announced Monday that they charged a Washington, D.C. man accused of running away from authorities in Temple Hills. Officers also said they shot the suspect, identified as 19-year-old Nashad Barksdale, when he fled. Investigators specified that they charged Barksdale with several gun crimes and damaging a police interview room. Officials noted that they were called to the 3100 block of Branch Avenue around 11:10 a.m. on Sunday for an armed carjacking in progress. Two suspects were on the scene, an incident report detailed. The write-up explained that one of them fled, drawing pursuit from the first-responding officer. The press release added that the other suspect, Barksdale, ran in the opposite direction toward Branch Avenue and the second-responding officer. Police informed that Barksdale then drew a handgun from his waistband, prompting the chasing officer to shoot him in the leg. Officers indicated that they gave Barksdale first aid until medics took him to an unnamed hospital. No officers were hurt, authorities clarified. Investigators mentioned that they found Barksdale's gun at the site of the shooting. After Barksdale left the hospital several hours later, detectives shared that they brought him in for questioning. Barksdale then admitted to pulling out a loaded gun when he saw law enforcement, the report disclosed. The write-up also alleged that the suspect caused about $1,000 in damage to the interview room. The Prince George's County Police Department Major Crimes Division stated that it is still looking for the first suspect and that it is investigating the actions of both accused men. The Internal Affairs Division wrote that it put the officer who shot Barksdale, a 16-year veteran assigned to the Bureau of Patrol, on routine administrative leave pending the investigation's outcome. This is normal protocol for any officer who shoots somebody. The press release confirmed that the office of Prince George's County State's Attorney Aisha Braveboy will review the case, as it does with all officer-involved shootings.
