Here are the top stories today in San Diego: A young man who carried out a hate-motivated shooting at the Chabad of Poway that killed one woman and injured three other people was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. John Timothy Earnest, 22, pleaded guilty in San Diego Superior Court to murder and attempted murder charges for the April 27, 2019, shooting. He also pleaded guilty to an arson charge for setting fire to the Dar-ul-Arqam Mosque in Escondido on March 24, 2019. (City News Service) As part of a nationwide crackdown on the criminal networks responsible for dramatic increases in fentanyl-related deaths, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration officials in San Diego announced the local seizure this month of tens of thousands of pills laced with the deadly narcotic. (City News Service) Drug use among juvenile arrestees in the San Diego region was down slightly in 2020, according to a San Diego Association of Governments report released Thursday. In the report, "2020 Juvenile Arrestee Drug Use in the San Diego Region," 60 percent of the youth interviewed tested positive for at least one illicit drug, lower than the 62 percent in 2019, but still the second-highest positive rate since 2000. (City News Service) Investigators are seeking the public's help to generate leads in a 22-year-old case involving the death of a woman who remained unidentified until last year. On Jan. 24, 2000, San Diego Fire Department firefighters found the body of 21-year-old Nicole Weis wrapped in burning cardboard secured with a rope in the parking lot of the College Avenue Baptist Church, 4747 College Ave., according to the San Diego Police Department.
