Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Friday October 1st, 2021! First, today's weather: Plenty of sunshine. High: 89 Low: 55. Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: Shelly is back! Who's Shelly? She's a 70 pound tortoise that escaped from Sacramento Adventure Playground on Saturday. Somebody left the front gate open and Shelly raced to freedom. Once she escaped, neighbors reported seeing someone in a black and white pickup truck abscond with the reptile. They must have really wanted her to load 70 pounds of tortoise into their truck. Anyway, Shelly was found on Tuesday and is currently having a small crack in her shell examined by a vet. Welcome home, Shelly! (KCRA3)Could indoor mask mandates be on their way out in Sacramento County? Speaking to the Board of Supervisors this week, Public Health Officer Dr. Olivia Kasirye said "Reaching a case rate of five per 100,000 would be a good point to end the indoor masking mandate that we have for Sacramento County." Sac County case rates are currently at 18 per 100,000. No timeline was discussed for reaching the case count goal. (FOX40) Parents of students at Sutter Middle School in Sacramento were concerned about homeless encampments making it unsafe for their children to walk or bike ride to school. Parent Amy Gardner took it upon herself to push city leaders and Caltrans to commit to cleaning up the camp. And it worked! "Caltrans identified the State right-of-way under State Route 51 (Business 80/ Capital City Freeway) at 29th Street between F and H Streets in Sacramento as a priority due to the excessive amount of trash and debris at the site that includes human waste and used needles," a statement from Caltrans said. The clean up date is October 4, further, Caltrans committed to "work with the city of Sacramento and other social services groups to offer those living at the encampment resources and services for better living situations." (KCRA3)This story is from neighboring Placer county, but it's so cool, I thought we could venture out a bit today. Granite Bay's Noreen Wredberg should be grateful that her husband was a little chilly when they visited Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas last Thursday. That's because they decided to move out of the shade and into the sun as they searched for a diamond in the rough. And there, glittering in the sunlight Noreen found a gem. She wasn't sure what it was but when they took it to the park's Diamond Discovery Center for identification they found out it was a 4.38-carat yellow diamond! She has since named it Lucy's Diamond, after her husband's kitten. At least the husband gets some reward for forgetting to bring a jacket! (FOX40) Officers are investigating a car-to-car shooting that happened on Highway 99 in South Sacramento. The victim's vehicle was hit by several bullets, but fortunately no one was injured. The shooting forced the closure of Southbound 99 at Mack Road at about 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The suspect is still at large. Anyone with information is asked to contact the CHP. While Orangevale, Citrus Heights and Folsom get a rash of bees, it seems the Pocket/Greenhaven area is seeing a rash of butterflies! Lucky them! But where did this delightful swarm come from? The colorful wave was a lot of displaced Orange Sulphur (Colias eurytheme) butterflies, according to UC Davis butterfly expert Dr. Art Shapiro, who has been contacted by more than one Pocket resident. Most likely, somebody just mowed a Yolo County field and the butterflies came to rest in Sac.
