PITTSBURGH, PA —Two-way traffic on weekend evenings is returning to a portion of East Carson Street in the South Side. Parking on that stretch of Carson on weekend nights is not. The city Department of Public Safety announced Thursday that traffic on East Carson will run in both directions between South 10th and South 18th Streets on Friday and Saturday nights beginning Friday. But no parking will be permitted in that area beginning at 8 p.m. on those evenings to ensure emergency vehicle access. The parking and traffic restrictions were implemented in July to try to curb vehicle congestion, improve pedestrian safety and stem an increase of violent incidents in the South Side. An uptick in such incidents had occurred since coronavirus capacity limits were lifted in the neighborhood's bars and restaurants. Over the past four weekends police working in the South Side corridor have made 12 arrests, one firearms-related arrest, one firearm seizure, issued 371 citations, and towed 69 vehicles. "The Department of Public Safety is pleased with the progress that has been made to increase safety on the South Side," city Public Safety Director Wendell Hissirch said.
