Woman Falls Asleep Behind Wheel, Drives Off Road In Antioch: Police

By Sam Borcia, the Lake & McHenry County Scanner It took firefighters approximately 30 minutes to extricate a woman trapped in her car after she fell asleep and drove off the roadway in Antioch, police said. The Antioch Fire Protection District and Antioch Police Department responded around 11:30 a.m. Monday to SkipperBud's, 1000 West Route 173 in Antioch, for a report of a vehicle crash. Antioch Police Department Commander Charles Smith said officers arrived and found a single-vehicle crash with injuries. The vehicle had struck a guardrail and went approximately 30 feet off the roadway into the tree line, Smith said. The driver of the vehicle, a 66-year-old woman, was trapped inside the vehicle. A LifeNet medical helicopter based out of Wisconsin had been initially placed on standby but was not needed. Firefighters were unable to free the woman from the car until a heavy equipment tow truck arrived and secured a tree, Smith said. Paramedics transported her to Advocate Condell Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. She has since been released from the hospital. Smith said the female driver told officers she may have fallen asleep at the wheel prior to the crash. No citations have been issued so far as the incident remains under investigation.
