When a guy has three total catches in a football game — all for touchdowns — he's had a special afternoon.Such was the case for Chabot blazer Jamal Lavallier, a Clayton Valley High graduate who enjoyed a TD trifecta in the Gladiators' 28-16 road win over West Hills-Coalinga on Sept. 25. He had scoring catches of 43 yards and 8 yards, both from quarterback JT Beck, and another 25-yard TD grab from Keko Turangan. Chabot has a two-man rotation at QB.When Chabot (2-2) lines up against visiting Shasta (1-1) at 2 p.m. on Saturday to complete nonconference play, the Knights would be wise not to lose sight of Lavallier. "He's definitely one of the fastest guys in the state," Chabot coach Eric Fanene said of Lavallier. "He's a blazer. His height — he's not that 6-5 dude, but we still play him on the outside. He can blow the top off of a coverage, and you have to know where he is on defense the whole time. He really stretches the field for us."Chabot is overcoming injuries while riding a two-game winning streak after a rough 0-2 start to the season. Fanene can see the young guys growing in stature week after week."We were really proud of the guys bouncing back," he said. "With two losses it could have gone downhill. ... Hopefully after the bye (next week) we can get a couple of key players back; we're excited about that too. We've got one more practice today (Thursday) and the hay will be in the barn, and it's on the guys from here on out."Beck and Turangan combined for 190 yards passing and three TDs last week. Amari Tidwell (68 yards), Tariq Jabbaar (45) and Joseph Broussard (38) paced the run game."The whole O-line turned it up against West Hills and provided protection for the quarterbacks and all those yards for our running backs," Fanene said.Shasta, which has played two fewer contests than Chabot, figures to present a tough test. Shasta sophomore Tyler Boston leads the Knights with 377 yards rushing and five touchdowns, and Jayden Gordon has 157 rushing."They have a good running game. They're big. They've got a lot of players. They travel well and they have a good coaching staff," Fanene said of Shasta, which fell to Laney 30-29 on Sept. 17. "Their defense presents some problems, being an odd front, a 3-4 look. They played Laney, which is very similar to us offensively, and we'll try to make a game plan to beat 'em."
