Rise and shine, Smithtown! Let's get you all caught up to start this Friday off on an informed note. These are the most important things going on in Smithtown today. First, today's weather: Mostly sunny. High: 68 Low: 53. Here are the top stories today in and around Smithtown: Roughly 40 Smithtown students spent a Saturday cleaning up Long Beach Park. The young volunteers with the Town of Smithtown Youth & Community Alliance teamed up with the National Guard Counterdrug Task Force and the Parks Department to remove harmful waste from the shoreline and recorded evidence of drug, tobacco and alcohol-related waste to help identify the areas where substance use is happening. The goal of the cleanup event was to raise community awareness as a part of the Alliance's efforts to keep Smithtown safe and clean. (Smithtown Patch) The Town of Smithtown released its proposed fire district budgets for 2022 this week. The proposed $5.2+ million budget is mostly allocated to total personal services ($1,100,000) and contractual and other expenses ($1,594,600). According to papers filed with the town clerk, just over $5 million of the total budget would be funded by real property taxes. (SmithtownNY.gov). The results of Smithtown's bi-annual paper shredding event are in: More than 300 households visited the Town of Smithtown Municipal Services Facility to safely shred over eight tons of sensitive documents. This shredding event was held courtesy of the Smithtown Department of Environment and Waterways, Municipal Services Facility, and the Department of Public Safety. Supervisor Ed Wehrheim said of the event's success, "Saturday's turnout solidifies our expectations as residents continue to protect themselves against identity theft while safely disposing of unwanted documents in an environmentally friendly manner." (Smithtown Patch) Two Long Island students were named as winners in the 2021 Clean Tech Competition. The annual worldwide competition looks for innovative research and design ideas in the "STEM" fields — science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
