Description

As part of NOLA River Fest, join us on our walking tour to learn the water history of New Orleans! There are clear throughlines between the places and the people that shaped New Orleans. Often, we think of the Indigenous tribes that cared for this unique Delta for thousands of years or French and the Spanish who influenced our language and our architecture, and African Americans who shaped the food, music, and traditional ways of life into what we see today. But have you ever considered how water precedes and commands everyone who resides on this land? Water is the beginning, middle, and future of the story of Southern + Caribbean city on the Mississippi River. As part of NOLA River Fest, join us on October 23 at 8:30 for a free soft launch of “The Green Tour” where we will explore the story of water and how it has shaped the environment, culture, and politics of New Orleans and Southeast Louisiana. Starting in Crescent Park, for 2 hours, we’ll explore topics from indigenous ways of life, the relationship between shipping and the enslavement of Africans, to the infamous wood screw pump the city relies on, and the looming dangers of cancer alley. Join us on a journey through time on the Mississippi River and reshape your perspective of what makes New Orleans one of the greatest and wettest cities on earth. We will begin our tour at Crescent Park promptly at 9:00, and make our way through the French Quarter, ending in Jackson Square at 10:45-- just in time for the second-line parade! Admission is free and includes one reusable water bottle and cocktail starring locally distilled Rum made from Louisiana sugarcane. Cold Water will also be available free of charge. In addition to drinks, we will be providing a classic New Orleans treat-- beignets! Participants must be 18 years or older as some topics may not be suitable for children.
