Come to New York's Lower East Side in the 1980s, visit with Izzy and sit a spell with her Bubbie (grandmother) in "Crossing Delancey", a charming romantic comedy playing in Curtain Call's Dressing Room Theatre, Stamford, October 1 through 17. The play that inspired the hit film of the same name, "Crossing Delancey" is the story of Izzy, a beautiful, intelligent, single young woman, and her Bubbie, who is determined to see her granddaughter get married before she dies. Izzy yearns to trade her traditional Jewish upbringing for the slick glamour of Manhattan's literary scene.Giving Cupid a nudge, Bubbie hires a matchmaker and sets out to find her granddaughter the perfect mate. But will Sam, the neighborhood pickle man, be the kind of man Izzy has in mind? While initially seeming to pine for a handsome author, the sweet smell of vanilla and charm of Sam, the pickle man, may just win her over. "Crossing Delancey" has a book by Susan Sandler, and is directed by Carole Claps, with set design by Peter Barbieri, Jr., lighting design by Jamie LaJoie, sound design by John Zimmerman and costume design by Christine Mallardi. "Carole has directed dozens of show over the years - some of our most successful comedies - so I am thankful that she was available to work on Delancey after an 18-month break," Ursone said. Claps said, "It took almost two years from the night of auditions to finally get this lovely warm and tender comedy up on the stage, but the wait was worth it." "With our world turned upside down, and people looking to just get back to some sense of normalcy, this show couldn't have been planned more perfectly. It's all about family, friendships and love, with a few pickles thrown in for good measure. This heart warming production is one that the entire family will enjoy," she said. "Crossing Delancey has long been a favorite of mine so I'm thrilled to be bringing the show back here for the first time in 20 years," said Lou Ursone, Curtain Call's executive director and producer for this show. "Like our "Mulberry Street" series, it doesn't matter what your background is, you'll enjoy the fun and love among the characters in this show," Ursone added. Starring as Izzy and Sam, are Newtown residents Sophie and Paul Tiesler. This is the second time they've played opposite each other on stage, having earlier this year appeared in the two-person comedy "Same Time, Next Year," also at Curtain Call. "I'm thrilled to have Sophie and Paul back with us for this show," said Ursone. "Crossing Delancey" was to be their first time sharing the stage, but due to Covid, the May 2020 production was postponed until now. "Amy Irving may have become everyone's favorite in the film version, but Sophie really wins your heart here," Ursone noted. Performances will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00PM and Sunday afternoons at 2:00PM, beginning October 1. The Dressing Room Theatre is located at The Sterling Farms Theatre Complex, 1349 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, CT. Doors open one half hour before show time. Tickets are $35 for adults, $25 for senior citizens and $20 for children under 21. (Discounted Flex Pass subscriptions offer savings of 25% and more.)
