NEWPORT, RI — Rogers High School was briefly placed under lockdown Wednesday following reports of a person with a gun on campus. There was no threat and the situation has been cleared, according to the principal. Principal Jared Vance told Patch that a student reported that they thought they saw a person with a gun around 12:30 p.m. The school was then placed on lockdown "out of an abundance of caution," he said, and police were called. A deeper investigation revealed that the student was confused, Vance said. They saw a hall monitor and mistook them for an intruder, assuming the person was armed. The lockdown was lifted around 1:25 p.m. "I appreciate the quick response of our Rogers High School students and staff, the teachers' calm and patience as we waited for the investigation to be carried out, and the swift response from the Newport Police who were on campus within moments of the call," Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermaine said. Students were dismissed at the regular time.
