Press release from the Champaign Unit 4 School District: 09/29/2021 Nine Unit 4 students, five from Central High School and four from Centennial High School, were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as part of the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Unit 4 Students Recognized include: Ethan Anderson (Centennial H.S., Commended) James Braun (Centennial H.S., Commended) Oskar Hansen (Central H.S., Commended) Tanish Khadse (Central H.S., Commended) Adele Miller (Central H.S., Commended) Aastha Patel (Centennial H.S., Commended) Shreya Sachdev (Central H.S., Commended) Leyna Tran (Centennial H.S., Commended) Lily Weaver (Central H.S., Semifinalist) The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, approximately 16,000, represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. Semifinalists are eligible to advance in the competition for National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2023. Commended students receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Although the approximate 34,000 students will not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some may be candidates for Special Scholarships provided by corporate and business sponsors. In February 2023, 15,000 Semifinalists who meet academic and other requirements will be notified that they have advance to Finalist standing and will receive Certificates of Merit attesting to their recognition in the program. All National Merit Scholarship winners (Merit Scholar awardees) will be chosen from the group of Finalists based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments. To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist's academic record, participation in school, community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, and write an essay.
