Description
October 29 is World Heart Day. Renowned cardiologist and scientist Dr. Ernst von Schwarz comments on the need for increased awareness of cardiovascular disease and risk factors, preventative measures, diagnosis and treatment.
HEART DISEASE AND STROKE IS THE WORLD’S LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH, CLAIMING 18.6 MILLION LIVES EACH YEAR.
"In May 2012, world leaders committed to reducing global mortality from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by 25% by 2025. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is accountable for nearly half of all NCD deaths making it the world’s number one killer. World Heart Day is an important platform for the CVD community to unite in the fight against CVD and reduce the global disease burden."
• Most cardiovascular diseases can be prevented by addressing behavioral risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diets and obesity, physical inactivity and excessive alcohol use.
The COVID - 19 pandemic has created additional concerns:
• COVID -19 can cause acute myocardial injury and chronic damage to the cardiovascular system, even in young people.• People with high blood pressure or heart conditions may be at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 and should continue to take their medications as prescribed.
