UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Two people were injured in a shooting outside an Upper West Side housing complex Tuesday night, according to a report.
A man and a woman were taken to area hospitals after the shooting, which happened outside the Wise Towers housing development on Amsterdam Avenue at W 90th St., CBS New York reports. Police said at least a dozen shots were fired and one gun was recovered, according to CBS New York.
A man who was shot in the chest ran up Amsterdam Avenue before slumping against a post, a witness told CBS New York. A woman who had a hand injury ran all the way to Central Park, CBS New York reports. Police are investigating if a third shooting victim is connected to this incident.
The shooting happened close to Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa's apartment on W. 87th St. Video shows Sliwa on the scene soon afterwards, crouching down to see a gun lying underneath a car. His office said he had to take cover during the shooting, though the video does not show that.
"When young men and young women carry guns with impunity, it makes for lawlessness in all neighborhoods, including the Upper West Side, which never before had these problems, even in the '70s and '80s," he said in a video posted to his YouTube channel.
Sliwa is blaming Mayor Bill de Blasio, saying his law enforcement policies are lax, a news release said.
"Crime is everywhere. Everywhere," Sliwa said. "The cops are reactive, not proactive. They don't stop, they don't question, they don't frisk anybody."
