DETROIT — Former Detroit City Councilman Andre Spivey resigned from office on Wednesday a day after pleading guilty to accepting over $35,000 in bribes. The resignation doesn't come as surprise, as city rules state that any elected official who is convicted of a felony must resign from office. Spivey informed Council President Brenda Jones with a resignation letter writing, "It has been a pleasure to serve the citizens of Detroit just shy of 12 years." "Beginning in 2009, I was able to serve in a citywide capacity and in 2013 and 2017 elected to serve District 4," Spivey said. T"he most rewarding and challenging was working to move our city past bankruptcy into financial solvency." Live in Detroit? Spivey pleaded guilty to a bribery conspiracy charge by accepting over $35,000 in bribe payments on Tuesday to help a towing contractor get a lucrative deal. The towing contractor, however, was actually an undercover agent. Spivey will likely face a guideline sentencing range of between 37 and 46 months of imprisonment.
