Cityhood Movement Garners Fresh GA Senate Support

ATLANTA — A new handful of Georgia lawmakers are lining up to support cityhood for Buckhead. An announcement scheduled for late Wednesday morning by the Buckhead City Committee promises at least six state senators will sign on to the bill to add the question of forming a city to the November 2022 ballot. Those slated to join as signors include Lee Anderson (R-Grovetown), Carden Summers (R-Cordele), Chuck Payne (R-Dalton), Matt Brass (R-Newnan), Marty (R-Tyrone), and Tyler Harper (R-Ocilla). BCC chief Bill White and other cityhood movement supporters have said that they want to determine their own path away from the City of Atlanta in the wake of increased crime and diminished confidence in Atlanta leaders. State Agriculture Commissioner and U.S. Senate Candidate Gary Black has endorsed the movement using the same language. And State Sen. Clint Dixon (R-Gwinnett), Gov. Brian Kemp's senate floor leader, has signed on to the bill. But while a feasibility study showed that Buckhead could afford to support itself, critics pointed to opposing analysis and questioned how separation from Atlanta could impact the region. The announcement of the new state senate signors to join author Brandon Beach (R-Alpharetta) and Dixon will be Wednesday at 11 a.m., at Charlie Loudermilk Park, Roswell Road and Peachtree Road Northwest, Atlanta.
