THIS EPISODE Carla Lyles is a multidisciplinary artist, activist, and entrepreneur who hails from Alief in Houston, Texas. Carla first shared her passion for community service by creating The Haven, a grassroots organization that empowered the youth through the arts. Providing free arts activities to the community and local shelters. Currently, Carla's drive to support the community has manifested in Keep Houston Dope, a movement started during Hurricane Harvey to help bring the city together, and her business Carla Sue, a fun and bold greeting card company that encourages self-love and hopes to help destigmatize mental health, one greeting card at a time. She also created the Carla Sue Network, a home shopping network to highlight other small businesses which she hosted on Instagram during the first months of the pandemic. MUSICIAL PERFORMANCE BY: Dayna Brenae: started off in the church which ignited her passion for music. Growing up in the choir she knew she had a gift but was torn on how to use it as in going the gospel route or r&b. Finding her sound and style took time and patience but with hard work and consistency God paved the way. Being that Dayna has been singing her whole life she didn’t release her first single to the world until 2020, “F.Y.I” & from then on she knew this was what she wanted to do. Shes competed in competitions such as American Idol but unfortunately they weren’t what she was looking for both times! After competing twice for American Idol and getting the short end of the stick Dayna decided to go more local and competed in the 2020 Musical Live Showcase and came in first place! It was her first actual competition and from then it was up & stuck! Since then she’s put her pedal to the medal and things have really been taking off. Releasing 2 new singles this year and they’ve been played all over the world Dayna Brenae is definitely on her way. LIVE PAINTING BY: Akaimi Davis: a mixed media artist. Her work is presently focused on transgenerational trauma (specifically in the Black community). Her mission is to spread awareness through conversations about her paintings, so we, as a community, can begin to make changes to the conditioning learned during slavery. The conditioning of our ancestors has mentally and genetically shaped and molded our present day experiences and responses to trauma, which we are continuing to pass on to the generations that follow. HEALTH HEALTH AND WELLNESS BY Dr. Leah Brock-White: is an educator, creator, bridge-builder and truth-teller.
