Galveston has prominent pillars of entrepreneurship, technology, innovation and business. And, we need your big ideas! Galveston has prominent pillars of entrepreneurship, technology, innovation, and business. And, we need your big ideas to tackle challenges experienced by the residents of Galveston. After all, as we build an innovation corridor linking Galveston and Houston, we want the Galveston-Houston region to be the best place to live, work, and play.Starting on Friday, October 15th, join us for a three-day Hackathon bringing together experts, mentors, and community members. Everyone will work in teams while taking workshops on creativity, design thinking, and pitch deck creation to create innovative solutions to tackle challenges in healthcare, coastal resilience, and community engagement within the Galveston Community. We are seeking solutions for the following challenges:Diabetes Self-Management Education and SupportFood Shortage and Distribution Participants will work in small teams with a collection of experts, entrepreneurs, students, and community members to tackle challenges presented by our sponsors, UTMB, TAMUG, and The City of Galveston. In this unique environment, we encourage all participants to use their creative thinking to develop innovative new concepts, ideas, or prototypes. By the end of the Hackathon, teams will have a finished pitch or prototype for an innovative product, service, or business model. Teams will then present their idea to a panel of judges and win prizes, including presenting your solution to the City Council, and there are even cash prizes for the most innovative solution! Parking Directions:When you arrive at The Ion, you have two options: 1) Park in the Visitor Lot just to the north of The Ion (west side of Fannin Street between the building and Eagle Street, enter from the parking lot from Fannin Street). The gate to the parking lot will be open. Note: Enter 4201 Fannin Street into your GPS for directions directly to this parking lot located in front of The Ion building Walk over to the building through the pedestrian gate in the fence and across The Ion Plaza. As you walk up to the main door, press the door buzzer, and security will let you into the building.2) Park in the parking lot on the east side of Fannin Street (4203 Fannin Street) between Eagle Street (to the north) and Wheeler Ave (to the south). Note: Enter 4203 Fannin St. into your GPS for directions directly to this parking lot. The parking lot entrance is roughly in the middle of the block - enter the parking lot before the pedestrian crosswalk/light on Fannin Street.As you drive up to the gate stop and press the buzzer to talk to security to enter the parking lot and let them know you are there for an eventWhen you exit your car, walk back towards the gate you entered towards the handicap exit - push the handicap button. That will release the magnet that allows you to pull the pedestrian gate open.
