SOMERVILLE, MA — The city has been awarded a $400,000 grant to renovate and expand Somerville Junction Park. Improvements include a splash pad, fitness area, community gardens and more trees, according to a press release. The park is located off of Central Street near the Community Path extension, which is currently under construction as part of the Green Line Extension project. The funding comes from the state's Parkland Acquisition and Recreation for Communities (PARC) grant program. In ceremony Sept. 21, Gov. Charlie Baker announced Somerville as one of 23 communities in Massachusetts to receive PARC funds this year. The program was established in 1977 to help cities and towns acquire and develop land for parks and outdoor recreation purposes. Since 2004, Somerville has been awarded more than $6 million through the program. PARC funds were recently used to rehabilitate Prospect Hill Park and reconstruct the Central Hill playground.
