Description
SALEM, MA — Salem's Forest River Park is due for a major restoration with the help of a $1 million state grant.
The Seaport Economic Council grant will help rehabilitate the historic bathhouse, create a community room and classroom, replace the failing pool, build a new splashpad, construct a small building for filtration equipment and lifeguard facilities, restore part of the altered coastline and implement accessible recreational trails.
The award was part of $6.7 million in grants given to 14 coastal communities to "advance projects that benefit commercial maritime industries, improve resident and visitor access to waterfront assets, mitigate the impacts of climate change, and advance future dredging."
"Massachusetts' ports and harbors launch fishing fleets, serve recreational boaters, attract tourists, and we are proud to continue the administration's commitment to partnering with communities to build and maintain the infrastructure of today and plan for the opportunities and challenges of tomorrow," Undersecretary of Community Development Ashley Stolba.
The Salem grant was tied with one in Weymouth for the largest of those awarded in this round of funding.
