NEW YORK CITY — A race to release hundreds of overcrowded Rikers Island inmates could get a virtual boost. Gov. Kathy Hochul signed an executive order Tuesday allowing expanded remote court hearings in New York City. The order — officially a "declaration of a disaster emergency" — dovetails with recent steps by Hochul and state lawmakers to help the city with the situation at Rikers. "No incarcerated person, no corrections officer, and no family member should have to endure the reality of Rikers as it exists today, and we must do everything in our power to prevent New Yorkers from languishing in Rikers awaiting their day in court," she said in a statement. "While more work needs to be done collaboratively with all levels of government, this executive order is an important step to alleviate capacity concerns and help protect New Yorkers." Hochul and lawmakers recently passed the "Less Is More Act," a sweeping parole reform, with an eye toward reducing the number of Rikers inmates. Jail officials were able to release 185 Rikers inmates under the reform, and transfer 125 to state facilities under an agreement with the city. Mayor Bill de Blasio said other steps the city is taking will reduce the jail's population below 5,000.
