MANCHESTER, CT — Popular Lutz Children's Museum staff member Alexa Sweeney is headed for a dream job.
It's arguably the job Sweeney has worked hard for. What Lutz officials called a "bittersweet announcement" came last week when the University of Connecticut graduate gave notice that she would be starting a new career at Yale University as an Animal Technician.
"I am going to miss the Lutz," said Sweeney, whose last day will be Oct. 10.
Sweeney has been at the museum for more than two years as a part-time animal room staff member.
She says the Yale interview committee was very impressed by her vast array of experience in workingwith so many different species of animals such as natives, aquatics, domestics, and exotics.
"Working in the animal room and getting to know the personalities of the different animals was one ofmy favorite things to do at the Lutz," Sweeney said.
"We couldn't be more proud. Alexa is an excellent employee and we are overjoyed that her workexperience at the Lutz led to such a prestigious position in her chosen career field," Lutz Executive Director Patricia Buxton said.
Sweeney graduated from UConn in May of 2021 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science.
"Introducing the animals to the public was fun, and down the road I hope to come back to help out," Sweeney said.
