Here are the top stories in Burlington today: Vermont General Assembly Representative Brian Cina presented his idea for a community-led first responder pilot program at an SGA meeting recently. Cina proposed the Neighborhood Outreach Worker (NOW) Program to train residents and students to serve as mediators and relationship-builders within the community. According to Cina, the proposal stemmed from the strained relationship between Burlington residents and the local police department. UVM Police Chief Tim Bilodeau stated in an email that he supports considerations that elevate the community's sense of safety and capacity for public safety response. (Vermont Cynic)A group of Chittenden County gyms will begin requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination among guests and employees in the coming weeks. The Edge fitness centers announced the vaccine requirement will go into effect on Oct. 18 for those who are eligible to receive it. Medical and religious exemptions will be accepted for members who fill out an online request form. The fitness centers join a small, but growing list of businesses in the greater Burlington area to begin requiring vaccinations among visitors.
