MARYLAND — An oyster festival is coming to Shady Side. Hispanic cultural and environmental events are slated in Bladensburg and Annapolis. Moreover, a small boat celebration is planned in St. Michaels. A Baltimore Oktoberfest rounds out the upcoming offerings. Patch recently partnered with several local organizations to bring you their latest news. This guest contribution comes from National Park Service Chesapeake Gateways and Chesapeake Conservancy. Here's what Jody Hedeman Couser submitted to help you explore the Chesapeake Bay: "Captain Avery Oyster Festival Come and enjoy the 24th annual oyster fest tradition at the Captain Avery Museum. The grounds and museum will be turned into a waterside extravaganza, with a string band with sweet vocals, classic rock band with blues guitar, and the Oyster Boys, who love to share their music and stories of life on the Chesapeake Bay. And, of course, there will be bushels of fresh Bay oysters – raw, with sauce, or in a shooter, as well as other seafood and festival grub, bake sale and beverages, plus crafts and pirate selfies for the kids. Oct. 16, 12:30 pm to 5:00 pm; Captain Avery Museum, Shady Side, MD. More information and tickets." "Festival del Rio Anacostia The annual and bilingual environmental celebration of the Anacostia River is back! There will be fun activities for the whole family. Hundreds of amateur and professional boatbuilders and enthusiasts come from all over the region to display their one-of-a-kind kayaks, canoes, and other traditional small craft. Instructors will be on hand to offer boatbuilding demonstrations and on Saturday watch the Miles River small craft boat race. Entrance to the Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival is included with general museum admission. Oct. 1-3, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, St. Michaels, MD. More information."
