Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Wednesday September 29th, 2021! First, today's weather: Clear throughout the day. High: 84 Low: 53. Here are the top stories in Sacramento today: Sacramento's got a real honey of a problem! Sacramento County vector control says it is seeing "intense" yellowjacket activity in the greater Sacramento area. "Last week our staff removed 40 yellowjacket nests in a single day," the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control district manager Gary Goodman said. The greatest activity has been seen in Orangevale, Carmichael, Citrus Heights and Folsom. Yellowjackets can be managed by eliminating food sources outdoors, and covering garbage bins and frequently emptying them. (FOX40) Today is National Coffee Day, so I think we should all head over to deVere's Irish Pub and get ourselves an Irish coffee - to say goodbye, sadly! After 14 years of terrific libations and unwavering support for the community, de Vere's is shutting its doors on October 3, a victim of the pandemic. Sacramento Mayor Pro Tem Angelique Ashby called the announcement "beyond sad. May your lives be filled with as much joy as you have served your city — endless," she said. The posted announcement said "For us, the pub will always remind us of the faces of our parents, our brothers and sisters, and all of you- friends who turned into family over the years. Thank you so much Sacramento for 14 years of memories. We wouldn't trade any of it for the world." (KCRA3) Ever thought about running a marathon? Me, either. But even if that was in the cards for me, running it BAREFOOT would not be! There is an amazing dude named Sway Garcia who is going to do exactly that. He's going to run the California International Marathon (CIM) this year sans shoes. He's taking off his shoes to raise money to buy shoes for our homeless population in Sacramento. He says he ran a half marathon last weekend (his longest shoeless run to date) and it felt like he was running on hot coals by the end of it. That's one dedicated young man! You can help him by visiting shoesforsac.com and making a donation. Or, I guess, you could try running on hot coals instead. Yeah... I'm headed over to the website... (Good Day Sacramento) The statewide eviction moratorium is ending this Friday, but officials want everyone to know that there is still money available to help with back rent, but only if you apply. California is using billions of federal dollars to pay off up to 18 months of most people's rent dating back to April 2020. To qualify, people must earn 80% or less of their area's median income and must have been affected by the pandemic — a nondescript requirement nearly everyone can meet. Officials are concerned that the people most impacted by the end of the moratorium are the ones who have the least access to information about the assistance. "We definitely don't want people to panic because there are still protections," Russ Heimerich, spokesman for the Department of Housing and Community Development said. "What we do want people to know is they have to take more positive, affirmative action and actually apply for relief in order to be protected." (Good Day Sacramento) A fire at the city hall parking garage in downtown Sacramento forced businesses in the building to close in March, and the structure has been empty ever since. The city was allowing people without homes to park in the garage overnight when one of the vans caught fire and burned down the structure, impacting the businesses who shared it. Good news, though! The city says that the majority of the garage, including the businesses on the first floor, should be able to reopen by late October or early November.
