Description
PETALUMA, CA — Police are investigating the recent vandalism of SMART railroad crossing equipment in Petaluma.
Around 1:45 a.m. Saturday, Petaluma police officers responded to reports that SMART railroad crossings were down and blocking the intersection of East Washington and Lakeville streets.
"Officers arrived on the scene and discovered the railroad crossing separated from the foundation and fell into the roadway blocking eastbound East Washington Street," Petaluma police Lt. Nick McGowan said.
A witness from a nearby business saw two men climb onto the railroad crossing, causing the structure to fall, McGowan said.
The two men left the area before officers got there.
Personnel with the city's Public Works Department and SMART responded and helped police close the roadway and divert traffic.
"SMART remains in the area and will be repairing the railroad crossing over the next several days," McGowan said.
Police asked anyone with additional information regarding the incident to contact the Petaluma Police Department at 707-778-4372 or [email protected].
