Description
ROCKDALE, IL — A body was recovered floating in the Des Plaines River in Rockdale on Tuesday night, according to Rockdale Police Chief Robert Dykstra.
Earlier in the evening, the body remained in a difficult area of water for rescue crews to get to, about 900 feet t0 1,000 feet from the bridge along Brandon Road, the police chief said.
Dykstra said that fire and rescue boats from the Troy Township Fire District, Channahon and Minooka were all in the water helping Rockdale police and fire with the recovery efforts near the Brandon Road Lock and Dam.
A family from Joliet had been searching the river this week after one of their relatives apparently jumped into the Des Plaines River in Joliet near Broadway Street three days ago, Dykstra said.
He said the family of the missing Joliet man notified police early Tuesday afternoon that they believed they spotted their loved one's body in the river near the Brandon Road Lock and Dam spillway area.
Members of the Will County Coroner's Office were called to the scene.
Joliet's Robert Hernandez went to the scene and produced a Facebook Live video of the incident.
Patch will continue to update this story as more information becomes known.
This marks the fifth body recovered from the Des Plaines River near Joliet so far this year.
On Sept. 10, the body of 42-year-old Joliet resident Quintin L. Bass was discovered in the canal near North Bluff Street and West Jefferson Street, not far from the broken Jefferson Street Bridge. Joliet police said his body was spotted by a boater.
