Throughout October, the Park District athletic fields will sport an extra dose of color. Fields will be painted pink, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The Parks Department came up with the idea when staff realized they had extra red paint which was not going to be used. Thinking outside the box, staff had the idea to mix it with white paint to create pink fields all month long. The solution reduces waste and will help bring awareness to the disease throughout the month.
One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. It is the most common cancer among American women, except skin cancers.
Park goers and game attendees can expect to see the repainted fields at soccer and football games soon.
"All fields will be completed by Friday, October 1 and we will continue painting them pink through the end of October," said Dan Payne, Director of Parks.
