Private walking tour of Shelter Island's Sylvester Manor led by curator and historian Donnamarie Barnes.
"Shelter Island's Sylvester Manor was established in 1651 as a provisioning plantation for the Barbadian sugar trade. An important early-American archaeological site, the Manor is complemented by over 10,000 primary documents, describing 400 years of American life through the eyes of three cultures on the plantation. Originally owned by an Anglo Dutch sugar consortium and worked by enslaved Africans, indentured or paid Native American and European laborers, it has since become a non-profit educational farm dedicated to bringing sustainable agricultural practices back to Shelter Island.
Please join curator and historian Donnamarie Barnes to learn more about this little-known slice of life on the East End. This is event is sponsored by the Social Justice Committee of Temple Adas Israel as part of its series of educational programs on racial justice."
