Join us to discuss affordable housing issues in Utah. Join us to hear from a panel of individuals working on housing policy and affordable housing issues. They will discuss questions such as: What is the problem? What is “Affordable Housing” operationally? What does the phrase mean in practice? What can a public administrator or average citizen do to influence affordable housing in either the state or the local community? What local policies are harmful to affordable housing efforts? Read about our panelists below: Representative Steve Waldrip, R-Eden In 2014, I became sufficiently irritated with my own whining about politics and became increasingly involved in the party. I started by serving as a county delegate. Most recently, I’ve served as the Legislative District 8 Chair. Professionally, I’ve had experience in law, taxation, economic development, real estate acquisition, leasing and development, and service on both business and community-based boards. I feel this background gives me a unique opportunity to apply those lessons to the challenges that confront our community and state today. On a more personal level, and as the father of four boys, aged 19 to 10, I want to create a better place for them to live, grow, and work. They deserve it. I believe that we have a duty to ourselves, our neighbors, and our children to leave them with a community that is better than ours today. That is the task that I will undertake as your representative in the Utah State Legislature. Representative Joel K. Briscoe, D-Salt Lake City Joel is serving his fourth term in the Utah House of Representatives for District 25, which covers the eastern and southern sides of Salt Lake City. He has served since 2010. For 21 years, Joel taught at Bountiful High School where he was a faculty advisor to the school’s first Gay-Straight Alliance. He was elected to the Salt Lake City School board in 1998 – and usher an end to the school board’s ban on clubs for LGBT students. He served on the board through 2002 and presided as president for his final two years. He finished off his 26-year tenure as a teacher at Bountiful High School. Joel served as chairman of the East Central Community Council in Salt Lake City from 2008-09 and helped found the Douglas Neighborhood Association, in these capacities he promoted equitable solutions for local issues. Since entering the legislature, Joel has been elected to the Democratic House leadership three times. He strives for policies that create a safer Utah in which all Utahns feel valued. He is fighting for a better future for our children – with the goal of making the Beehive State an even great place to live, work and raise a family.
