Take a tour of Topeka High School's art treasures and hear stories about the place of art in THS history
Topeka High School is an architectural and historical treasure, but did you know that it also has an important art history? To find out why, join historian and THS alum (’93) Kara Heitz as she guides you on a tour of the school's art treasures and relates stories about the place of art in the history of Topeka High.
We will learn about the unfinished WPA mural and the conflict that caused it to be incomplete.
We will explore the deep connection between THS and the larger arts community in Topeka.
We will hear stories of famous Topeka High alum who became well-known artists.
And we will view Greek friezes, English pageantry, Italian landscapes, bronze Trojans, and get a glimpse of pioneers on the trail, the life of George Washington, a history of the written word, and much more.
Participation is limited to 25 people, but there will be two tours. The morning tour begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, with a second opportunity starting at 1:30 that afternoon. Gather in the foyer at the main entrance on 10th Street.
