Gowanus Canal's Third Street Bridge To Close Nightly For A Month

BROOKLYN, NY — One of the five bridges over the Gowanus Canal will close for another few weeks for repairs, according to transportation officials. The Third Street bridge will shut down for construction each night between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. starting Monday until Oct. 29, the Department of Transportation announced. The closure comes just days after the bridge reopened at night from a previous closure, which lasted from Sept. 13 through Sept. 24. Continued work on the #ThirdStreetBridge will require nightly FULL closures 9/27-10/29, 11PM-5AM. During construction, transportation officials said Brooklynites can use the Ninth Street and Union Street bridges as alternative routes. The closure is the latest in a series of repairs to the canal's bridges. Work was also done this summer on the Carroll Street and Union Street bridges.The Third Street bridge is one of the oldest bridges that offers a path over the waterway. It was originally built, like the Union Street bridge, in 1905. The Carroll Street bridge, which was first opened in 1889, is the oldest bridge on the canal.
