Up and at 'em, Madison—it's Tuesday! Good morning to new subscribers a.k.a. my friends who I pressured to sign up. One of my favorites things are those little free libraries. I have enough unread books in my room, so I hardly ever actually use them. However, if I am walking by I always have to stop and check out the selection. It's a lil glimpse into what those people have read or at least what they are trying to get rid of—and I love to snoop. Madison's has a lot of little free libraries and while they are all precious, today I saw my definitive favorite. The owners turned it into a replica of their house including little figurines, which I imagine are supposed to look like the family who lives there. These little free libraries are inviting, warm and, of course, free but with the option to reciprocate. All things that I think make a strong, supportive community. Here is a Wisconsin State Journal story from 2018 about little libraries and its success in Madison. Song of the Day: "Harmony Hall" by Vampire Weekend Anyway, here are some of the top stories for today. First, today's weather: Clear throughout the day. High: 76 Low: 49. Here are the top stories in Madison today: Dane County Executive Joe Parisi proposed to put $10 million toward a crisis triage center, which would serve those who are experiencing mental and behavioral health-related crises. The center would aim to prevent folks with behavioral issues from dealing with law enforcement and the criminal justice system and, additionally, redirect them to more resources. (The Cap Times) The Madison Metropolitan School District Board of Education unanimously passed a COVID-19 vaccination mandate for its staff. Staff, as well as contractors and volunteers, will have until Nov. 1 to show proof of vaccination. Those who are granted medical or religious exemptions are required to test twice a week. (Channel 3000)Due to our growing population, Madison's maps are getting a touch-up! But what does this mean for UW-Madison students? Juliana Bennett, who serves the student-heavy District 8, is concerned new maps could "dilute" student voices. City Planner Ben Zeller said the district will still have a strong student makeup. (WORT) The BIPOC Birding Club of Wisconsin was created to making birding, what the club founders felt was a predominantly white activity, more accessible to people of color. Last June, after the police were called on a Black birder in New York, cofounder Jim Galligan especially wanted to create a space where people of color could feel welcomed and explore a new interest. (Wisconsin State Journal)Six local musicians were spotlighted through a visual arts project with Dane Arts Mural Arts. The portraits are likely going to end up in the lobby of the City-County building. Until then, check out these stunning portraits online, as well as the music of some of Madison's most talented musicians.
