A one-day workshop on business topics for small dry kiln businesses. Will cover equipment, drying techniques, marketing, business and more. The Small Dry Kiln Business Workshop is funded by the US Forest Service Wood Education and Resource Center of Princeton, WV with the purpose of supporting small lumber drying operations in the US. This workshop is hosted by North Carolina State University Wood Products Extension who is hosting six small sawmill workshops in the northern US in 2021 and 2022. These workshops focus on three topics = small sawmill businesses, small dry kiln businesses and live edge slab businesses. The Small Sawmill Business Workshop strarts at 9 am and runs to 4 pm with a combination of classroom discussions and a tour of a local sawmill and dry kiln business. Our site host is Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI and we will have our classroom sessions on campus at the Natural Resources Building, Michigan State University, 480 Wilson Rd, East Lansing, MI 48824. Parking is on your own at public spaces on campus. The morning and early afternoon is focused on discussions by sawmill professions on the topics of sawmill equipment, sourcing logs, sawing patterns, basic lumber grades and scaling, blades, air drying practices, kiln drying, marketing and business management. The goal is discuss the elements needed to have a successful and profitable small sawmill business. Later in the afternoon we will travel using our own transportation to a nearby small sawmill and lumber drying operation with the owner explaining the details of his business. Lunch will be on your own with multiple nearby campus food outlets. A business Guide for Profitable Small Sawmill Business will be provided.
