Here are the top stories today in Salt Lake City: The American Red Cross is facing an emergency blood and platelet shortage following a sharp decline in donor turnout during the summer months. According to a recent press release from Red Cross Utah, the national organization must collect 10,000 additional blood products each week over the next month in order to recover the blood supply needed by hospitals and the patients they're caring for. The national Red Cross blood inventory is the lowest it has been at this time since 2015. (KUTV 2News)While many Utahns look up and hope for rain to end the water crisis, local utilities are turning their attention downward. Leaks and breaks can spout clean drinking water into the ground without a person being able to see it, wasting some of Utah's precious water supply. While water conservation is a focus, there are other benefits that come from better identifying leaks. Fracta, a company out of Silicon Valley, works with utilities around the world to use data to help utilities make better decisions on replacing or repairing pipes that may be prone to leaking. (Salt Lake Tribune) A doctor at the University of Utah is offering classes to help keep people out of the emergency room by teaching them how to survive in the mountains as they explore all the nature Utah has to offer. (fox13now.com) Utah restaurants are still plagued by staff shortages which has forced many to offer higher pay rates and sign on and retention bonuses in order to not raise menu prices.(gastronomicslc.com)A 36-year-old woman was injured on Sunday after she slipped and fell about 15 feet while descending a rope ladder at Farmington Creek waterfall. The Davis County Sheriff's Office said Monday she has been released from the hospital and is recovering.
