MIDDLETOWN, CT — A Middletown man has been charged with attempted murder after police said he stabbed his roommate during an argument last Thursday. Police responded to an apartment in the 400 block of Main Street on the report of a stabbing and found that a woman had been stabbed in the abdomen by her roommate, who was identified as 52-year-old Hayward Smith, according to Lt. Brian Hubbs. Hubbs said Smith left the apartment before police arrived, and the 54-year-old victim was taken to the Hartford Hospital Trauma Center where she underwent emergency surgery. While officers were at the apartment, Smith walked into the Middletown Police Department and turned himself in, according to Hubbs. He was arrested by officers at the front desk. Police found that Smith and his roommate had allegedly been using drugs together and arguing about money for most of the night, according to Hubbs. During the argument, the victim told Smith that she reported him for fraudulent use of her social security benefits and that he would be going to jail. "Smith became very angry over the allegations," Hubbs wrote in a news release. "He told officers that he did not want to go to jail for something he didn't do and that 'if he went to jail, it would be for something he actually did.'" Smith is accused of using a kitchen knife to stab the victim "with the intention of killing her," according to Hubbs. He then dropped the knife and left the apartment, Hubbs said. Smith was charged with first-degree assault, criminal attempt to commit murder, carrying a dangerous weapon and second-degree breach of peace. He was being held in lieu of a $500,000 bond with a court date of Oct. 19, according to state judicial records. Hubbs said the victim is in stable condition and is recovering from her surgery. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Officer P. Thomas or Sgt. A. Smith at 860-638-4000.
