EVANSTON, IL — Police are investigating a shooting and stabbing that left one man dead and another injured Sunday in Evanston.
Officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of Wesley Avenue around 3:30 p.m. after someone called 911 to report one person had been shot and another had been stabbed, according to Evanston police.
Police said they arrived to find two wounded men at the scene in an alley parking lot area, and the Evanston Fire Department rushed them both to an area hospital.
Van T. Ross, 45, of Naperville, was pronounced dead shortly before 5 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, which was scheduled to conduct an autopsy Monday.
Police said the 27-year-old Chicago man who was stabbed in the incident was in stable condition.
The apparent homicide is being investigated by the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force, or NORTAF, and detectives from the Evanston Police Department.
No one is in custody. The investigation suggests the shooting and stabbing are related incidents and that it does not appear to have been a random act "due to what the investigation has revealed so far," according to a police spokesperson.
Police said whether anyone else was involved — or whether only the two men who suffered injuries were involved — remains under investigation.
Sunday's fatal shooting was the second in Evanston in three weeks. Earlier this month, 21-year-old Stanley Butler was shot to death inside his Dodge Avenue home.
Alejandro Lopez, 19, of Waukegan, faces charges of first-degree murder, home invasion and the discharge of a firearm along with aggravated unlawful use of a firearm in connection with his death.
