EVANSTON, IL — A fire displaced seven Evanston residents from their home Saturday, fire officials said.
Firefighters arrived at the scene of a blaze in the 2300 block of Foster Street shortly after 8:30 a.m., finding heavy smoke and fire in the basement, according to an Evanston Fire Department spokesperson. All residents had evacuated on their own by the time firefighters arrived.
Fire crews were able to contain the fire in the basement unit where it started. The blaze was extinguished within 30 minutes, leaving extensive damage in the basement and minor smoke damage to the first floor, said Division Chief Kim Kull.
No one was injured, and the American Red Cross has offered emergency services for the displaced residents, according to Kull.
Neighboring fire departments assisted by helping cover Evanston while its crews were fighting the fire.
Fire officials said the cause of Saturday's blaze remains under investigation.
