By Judith Martin-Straw, Culver City Crossroads September 27, 2021 While Culver City does not vote for the mayor of Los Angeles, there is no doubt that the person holding that office is important to our own local government for many reasons. After weeks of speculation, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) issued the following statement: "Our city is facing a public health, safety and economic crisis in homelessness that has evolved into a humanitarian emergency. I've spent my entire life bringing groups of people together in coalitions to solve complex problems and produce concrete change — especially in times of crisis. Los Angeles is my home. With my whole heart, I'm ready. Let's do this — together. I'm running for mayor." After many rumors last year that she was being considered as Biden's choice for Vice President, it's clear the Bass is a politician of powerful national status. Her decision to run for mayor of one of the largest and most influential cities on the planet may well be a step up from her long and successful congressional record. Her last election to Congress as the representative for California's 37th District in 2020, which she won with a more-than-confident 85.9% of the vote, may have her looking for fresh goals. The current mayor, Eric Garcetti, has been put into the post of U.S. Ambassador to India.
