Arson Investigation Underway After LI Fire: Police

RIVERHEAD, NY — An arson investigation is underway after a fire was started outside a home in Riverhead Sunday night, police said. According to Riverhead Town Police, a call came in at 9:28 p.m. about a residence "fully engulfed" on Doctors Path. When police arrived they found a small ground fire, which they extinguished, near a home on Doctors Path, authorities said. Riverhead detectives, the fire marshal, and Suffolk County Police investigated the incident and said someone had thrown a plastic gasoline container on the ground outside the residence; a flammable substance was ignited and caused the nearby ground, grass, and shrubs to burn, police said. Smoke damage was visible on the residence, police said. Two people were inside when the incident occurred but no injuries were reported, police said.
