Join historian Donald Friary to explore America’s first National Historic Site. You’ll see the 1819 Custom House; walk along Derby Wharf, a lasting reminder of the bustling port that once thrived here; and learn about the diverse community that lived and worked on the harbor front. This tour is offered as part of Essex Heritage’s Field Institute in partnership with the National Park Service. FAQs How long is the tour and where does it go? The tour lasts roughly 45 minutes, and take place at Salem Maritime National Historic Site Where does this tour leave from? Tours meet in front of Waite & Peirce at 190 Derby Street, Salem. When should I arrive? Please make sure to arrive at least 5 minutes prior to your tour time to check in with Essex Heritage staff. All tours leave promptly at the scheduled time.  Do I have to bring my printed ticket? No, just provide the name you used to order the tickets and the number of tickets you purchased. What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? The tour takes place entirely outdoors on dirt paths or uneven cobblestone streets, that are not easily navigated with wheelchairs or motorized scooters.
