Description

Join us for a presentation and panel discussion led by three local indigenous women as we celebrate Indigenous People’s Day 2021. The Santa Ana History Room seeks to elevate the voices of indigenous women as they speak on their experiences, their histories, and pertinent indigenous issues of our times. Our vision is to create space for the sharing of culture and knowledge in this enriching presentation and panel discussion. The presentation and panel discussion will primarily focus on bringing awareness to the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women throughout the United States placed within the context of historical experiences of women from local indigenous tribes (Acjachemen and Gabrielino). Mescalero Apache Photographer Nicole Merton will discuss her body of work covering the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2-Spirit Movement. Naomi Knox will present on Acjachemen Indigenous roots and culture of Orange County, focusing on Acjachemen women’s history. With the focus on Gabrielino women’s history, Jamie Rocha will present on Gabrielino Indigenous roots and culture of Orange County. Additionally, the Santa Ana Public Library will host the Here, Our Voices: Our Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Movement (MMIW) Exhibit beginning October 9th, 2021, and through December 2021. The exhibit will showcase indigenous photographer Nicole Merton’s work in documenting the voices of indigenous persons who have been affected by the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2-Spirit Movement. She elevates these voices and experiences to raise awareness around indigenous issues in the hope that those affected may find the justice, healing, and closure they deserve. The event will observe CDC Recommendations and will be socially distanced with limited capacity. We highly encourage guests to wear masks. Please reserve your tickets on Eventbrite ahead of time. The event will be live-streamed on the Santa Ana Public Library facebook page. For more information, please call 714-647-5288. This event is brought to you by the Santa Ana Public Library and co-sponsored by the Friends of the Santa Ana Public Library. We encourage you to donate to the Friends of the Santa Ana Public Library (https://www.fosapl.org/) so that they may continue to support Library’s projects and events for Santa Ana communities.
