Here are the top stories today in Roanoke: Roanoke nonprofit Tudor House spread the message of suicide awareness at Grandin Theatre's showings of "Dear Evan Hansen" this weekend. The movie explores the themes of bullying, mental health, and suicide. Before each show, the theatre presented a slide highlighting Tudor House while counselors and mental health workers waited in the theater lobby. The nonprofit organization is also working to raise $100,000 by the end of the year to help offer free mental health services. (WSLS 10) Officials at Roanoke County Public Schools are closely monitoring COVID transmission at Northside High School, where nearly 1/3 of the freshman class is now under quarantine. Within two days this past week, 78 high schoolers were exposed; the 27 students who were vaccinated do not have to quarantine unless they start experiencing symptoms. Hidden Valley Middle School and Cave Spring High School also saw high spikes in cases, with multiple cheerleading activities across the district paused due to exposure. (WDBJ7) A rezoning request for 1345 Plantation Road has been approved by the Roanoke City Council. The rezoning request from BrightView LLC would turn the site into a new mental health and substance abuse outpatient clinic. While this decision has drawn mixed reviews from the Roanoke community, the project has been approved and is in the early stages of development.
