Press release from the Birmingham Police Department: 2021-09-25  The Birmingham Police Department detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. The initial incident occurred on Friday night September 17, 2021. The victim has been identified as Ashley Canty, (28),  b/f of Birmingham, Alabama. The victim has been identified as Ashley Canty, (28),  b/f of Birmingham, Alabama.  At approximately 9:00 p.m., officers from the North Precinct responded to a call of a one car accident in the 2800 block of Norwood Boulevard. Officers arrived and was alerted by a community member of a person inside of the vehicle shot. The victim, Ashley Canty was found in the driver seat unresponsive. Birmingham Fire and Rescue transported Canty to the hospital with serious injuries. Detectives were later notified by hospital staff on September 24, 20221 that the victim succumb to her injuries. The victim was shot while driving down Norwood Boulevard and her vehicle came to a rest after striking a fire hydrant. Detectives believe the victim was targeted, however a clear motive has not been established. No arrest has been made. The investigation  is  ongoing. Updates will be provided as this case develops.
