About The ExhibitionFinding Beauty in a Dark Place is a meditation on this troubled time. Created over a span of eight months, from 2020 to 2021, Finding Beauty consists of fifty-two individual weavings of wool, cotton, linen, and silk, assembled as one. It charts the course of the COVID-19 virus throughout the United States. From Maine to Alaska, measuring eighteen feet in length, Finding Beauty’s composition speaks to the indecipherable chaos of this seemingly unending time, as well as the promise of order implied by published daily statistics. The beauty of the graphs belies the pain, fear, and sadness wrought by the virus, but also speaks to the unexpected beauty, deepened relationships, and newly discovered pathways forward. Finding Beauty reveals an inherent duality in the daily charting of COVID-19, highlighting the contrasts and similarities within our country, our connectedness, and our isolation. Finding Beauty in a Dark Place tells a story about the United States that is both seared in memory and seemingly without end. As the artist's son said many months ago, “remember when it was only two weeks?” About The ArtistToni Ross is a conceptual artist using time-honored material and site-responsive installation to explore themes of political and social distress.
